Honouring Our Indigenous Physician Leaders

June 21, 2021 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Hosted by: VCH Indigenous Health, VCH Physician DEI Committee, Vancouver Physician Staff Association

With the release of the In Plain Sight report last year, and with the heartbreaking news of the remains of 215 children discovered at the Kamloops Indian Residential School, we are reminded again and again of the damaging impact of racism and colonialism on the Indigenous communities, and on our Indigenous colleagues and patients. Injustice and inequities continue to be rampant in our society and in our health care system.

As settlers, one of the first steps we can take in our commitment to anti-racism is to learn about the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, and to listen to our Indigenous colleagues, partners, and patients. We are grateful that three local and national Indigenous physician leaders have agreed to spend an evening with us on June 21st to share their personal and professional journeys and experiences. We would also like to use this opportunity to acknowledge the strength and resilience of the Indigenous peoples. We hope you are able to join us for this live chat.

Our panelists include:

Dr. Alika Lafontaine – 2021 President-Elect of the Canadian Medical Association; Co-Founder of Safespace Networks

Dr. Don Wilson – incoming Regional Medical Director for Indigenous Health at VCH

Dr. Terri Aldred – Medical Director for Primary Care, First Nations Health Authority; Site Director, UBC Indigenous Family Medicine Program; Indigenous Lead, Rural Coordination Centre of BC
